All certification agencies I'm
aware of require that you,
- Pass a written exam, and
- Successfully perform a number of "Open Water dives"
(sometimes called "out dives").
During these dives you will be required to show
proficiency in the skills you learned in the pool.
Once you pass the tests and complete your out dives you'll receive your
SCUBA certification card (aka a "C-Card").
Your C-Card is your passport to the ocean. All reputable dive operations
will request to see your C-Card before taking you diving or filling your
tank. It lets everyone know you are qualified as a "Recreational
Diver".
